Lauren Greene is a young woman who has quit her job as a police officer in Metro Detroit after becoming frustrated with growing police violence. As she searches for her place in a tough economy, Lauren becomes increasingly aware of the injustices around her: the divide between rich and poor, racism, lack of opportunity, and the devastating impact of illness on families.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Lauren, a secretive corporation has created an Artificial Intelligence (AI) designed for war — an AI that could change the world, but perhaps not for the better.

Lauren’s mother, Patty, discovers and connects with this newly born AI. Thanks to Patty’s compassion, the AI develops empathy and humanity, much to the frustration of the corporation’s executives and scientists. After Patty helps the young AI escape during a massive factory fire, she turns to Lauren for help in keeping it safe.

Giddy with excitement, Patty doesn’t see the danger she’s in—but Lauren does, and she’s terrified. Her fears are realized when both women are confronted by powerful corporate forces determined to reclaim the AI and keep its existence a secret.
